چکیده

[1] During the 1997–1998 El Niño event, the average sea surface temperature (SST) in the Taiwan Strait (TWS) in the winter was 1.4 C higher than that of the winter climatological mean. The areal ratio of the warm water ( 2 C above the regional mean) to the cold water ( 2 C below the regional mean) in the TWS increased by 25%while the area of the eutrophic water (chlorophyll a >1 mg m ) was halved. Field observations also indicate that the mixed layer in the TWS became more nutrient-poor during this winter. These observations are consistent with a diminished advection of the cold and eutrophic Zhe-Min Coastal Water, and, concomitantly, an expansive intrusion of the warm and oligotrophic South China Sea Warm Current/ Kuroshio Branch Water to the TWS as the northeast monsoon was weakened. Thus, El Niño events potentially can have significant ecological impacts on the TWS. Citation: Shang, S., C. Zhang, H. Hong, Q. Liu, G. T. F. Wong, C. Hu, and B. Stratification and Double-Diffusive Convection in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait during Winter Monsoon

Investigation of stratification in marine environments is always considered by researchers. In this study double-diffusive convection and stratification in the Bab el Mandeb strait is investigated by analyzing of field data. Measurement of seawater temperature and salinity from ARGO project (2009 to2014) and also R-V Knorr (2001) cruise with the daily average of seawater temperature and salinit...

Physico-biological modeling of seasonal changes of plankton community in south of Hormoz strait

Planktons are floating microscopic organisms that are confirmed as the primary producers and initial transporters of carbon to the higher levels of food webs. Moreover, planktons have an special importance and status in the habitat of aquatic ecosystems and therefore, their population dynamic assessment is essential in the study of these ecosystems. An extensive range of physical factors viz. n...

An overview of physical and biogeochemical processes and ecosystem dynamics in the Taiwan Strait

topography, alternating monsoon forcing and conjunction of several current systems [such as the Zhejiang–Fujian (Zhe–Min) Coastal Current, the Kuroshio intrusion and the extension of the South China Sea Warm Current], the physical and biogeochemical processes and ecosystem dynamics in the Taiwan Strait vary significantly both in space and in time. Our recent interdisciplinary studies, combining...

A Simulation Study of Multi-path Characteristics of Acoustic Propagation in the Strait of Hormuz

Multi-path interference due to boundary reflection in shallow water acoustic communication poses a major obstacle to reliable and high-speed underwater communication system. In this study, initially 3D variations of field data such as sound speed, temperature and salinity in horizontal transects of the Strait of Hormuz were analyzed using the ROPME data. Later, data on typical sound speed ...

The impact of coastal runoff on ocean color during an El Niño year in Central California

The introduction of the SeaWiFS ocean-color instrument in the autumn of 1997 coincided with the onset of perhaps the largest El Niño event of the century, providing us with the opportunity to monitor the impact of such events on biological and bio-optical properties in central California. The increased importance of coastal runoff (both sediments and fresh water) during the winter of 1998 have ...
